How do I get the old/musty/moldy/mildew smell out of my vintage suitcase?
I just bought this vintage suitcase at a garage sale and it has the nastiest old moldy/musty smell to it that I can’t get out. I’ve tried baking soda and I let it air out, but it didn’t work. I really like this suitcase and want to use it, but I am allergic to mold and don’t want the smell all over my clothing and in my shoes and other stuff I put in there. Help please?!

I never thought I’d get rid of the bad mildew smell in an old book that I really wanted to keep. I read that old-fashioned clay kitty litter would help, and though I was skeptical, I put the book in a box and covered it with the kitty litter, even between the pages. I left it there for a long time, a few months, in a dry attic. Smell was gone. I don’t really know how long it took to get rid of it, because I didn’t check on it before that length of time. But it’s worth a try. And definitely try putting it out in the sun, open.
You also might try Borax, which kills mold, and if the case is made of a material that you can get wet, you could make a borax mixture with water and sponge it on the suitcase inside and out and then put it out in the sun to dry.
Good luck!
sprinkle inside with baking soda , leave o/night , empty out and swab down with a damp cloth that white vinegar added , leave outside open in a sunny warm area
I like the tip of the other person. That is the cheapest way to go. If it does not work some hardware and some sports stores sell something that draws smells out. Don’t know for sure whether they will take the mildewy smell out, but my son’s soccer shoes which had gotten that same smell from being trapped in a plastic bag while wet do smell somewhat better. Also try Febreeze.
