A reply to Cate:
These people do insurance valuations:
http://www.bathantiquesonline.com/antique-appraisals/antique-appraisal.htm
but I'm not sure whether it is working online. I don't know anyone in Australia doing that, but I would definitely check online resources, like: http://www.whatsitworthtoyou.com
I don't know how reliable they are but also insurance company should state what kind of valuation would be taken into consideration.

Hello Rosie, For the ideas dig this website a bit and pages it is referring to. And to buy the cheapest possible vintage suitcase online - only on auctions: eBay and Etsy. And hopefully you will have luck, but the choice is really incredible! Otherwise you must search locally on markets...

Hello, I am a art textile student and for my final piece I must create something to do with 'Travel'. I would like to get a vintage suitcase and have different things coming out of it as if it were overflowing with things you need to travel with. However I am finding it very difficult to get hold of a cheap suitcase that I could possibly sew things to. I will not get any marks if I just stick vintage stickers to it. Do you recommend anywhere I could buy it or any other ideas on it.
I would be ever so grateful if you would get back to me ASAP please.
Thank you x

Help required. A friend has just had her house flooded and her vintage crocadile suitcase was damaged. how do we find a value for the insurance company. Is there anybody in Australia that you know of who could conserve the suitcase?

It must be a very interesting suitcase. Cleaning it needs some common sense, I think. The decals should be just dusted off and if there are many of them I'm not sure whether there is a sense to clean the leather between them... Slightly dampened paper towels are good for a start with maybe a little help of any household cleaner.
If you do decide to clean the leather, one tip that is apparently working is to use a Brylcreem! It should be spread on the surface using sufficient amount to get it all covered. If it is really stiff, it can be left on overnight. Then remove Brylcreem with a paper towel and keep rubbing until no more dirt shows up on the towel.
If you don't trust this method - use it first on a tiny, not well visible surface. Good luck!!!

I have a vintage (1930s) leather suitcase with many travel decals that belonged to a U.S. Surgeon General. It has a lot of history stuck to it.

How can I clean it without damaging the undamaged decals?
