How To Clean Vintage Leather Suitcase?

20 July 2010

When you wish to clean a vintage leather suitcase, you should try using a little bleach scouring powder. Put just a little bit of this scouring powder into a small bowl, take slightly dampened scrubbing pad and dip it into this powder. Scrub the scuffed area sparingly. Make light circular motions over smaller areas at one time.

To protect the new clean look, one of the best ways is to use some sort of wax, such as Turtle wax. This will protect the leather surface from the outside world.

If you need to mend your vintage suitcase or part of it, you might consider Mighty Mendit to simplify the process as much as possible.

The History Of The Suitcase

20 July 2010

Vintage Suitcase LoadSuitcases appearance has transformed significantly since the early days of travel when clothing was packed into cumbersome, heavyweight trunks. Indeed, traveling in earlier times was a big task and often two strong man had to be employed to carry and load a suitcase. Nowadays it’s not the case any more, showing how much the designs of suitcases have developed and improved.

In time, as traveling became more affordable and no longer reserved for the elite, there was an increasing demand for new and improved designs. Nowadays we are presented so huge choice of luggage solutions that sometimes choosing the perfect suitcase is almost as difficult as choosing a perfect holiday destination. Design changes were mainly dictated by convenience and functionality, that was usually reflected by loss of quality of materials used and overall elegant look of old suitcases.

The average look of the suitcase evolved over few last decades from rectangular shape with a handle at the top to carry, to the contemporary wheeled suitcases and bags. This idea was a big success and it is hard to find a suitcase nowadays that does not have wheels on it. Those suitcases are usually also equipped with extendable handles that can be pulled out. This allows you to pull the suitcase conveniently along behind. Better models are also equipped with shock absorber stabilizers to minimize the bouncing of the suitcase over a rough surface. To prevent from the content of the suitcase being damaged, suitcase designers have also introduced hard-shell suitcases. Another modern feature was introducing built-in combination locks to prevent theft of goods, which can be a problem at many airports.

Nowadays we have suitcases made of fabric plastic, in every possible color, in several different sizes. We have them also available in sets ranging from a small vanity case to the largest main suitcase. And obviously we have also a choice of the luggage quality usually reflected by prices.

In all that variety, vintage style suitcase are becoming increasingly popular, as having more character, quality and aesthetic value. We use them for travel, or often just for decoration.

If customs agents ruin your luggage, is there anything you can do about it?

      20 July 2010

I loaned a vintage suitcase to my husband to transport a pricey video camera from America to Europe. It is the old fashioned “hard shell” type, with a satin liner on the inside.
Apparently, when customs agents were searching it, they sliced open the satin liner on the insides of the suitcase.
I am assuming that there’s nothing to do about it now, but I would like to know, as this was a beautiful piece of luggage in perfect condition!

      Relining vintage luggage?

      20 July 2010

I recently purchased two vintage suitcases… without peeking inside. I won’t make that mistake again. Inside one of the suitcases is what appears to be a rather large BLOOD stain. Yikes! My question is this: where do I go to have the interior of a suitcase relined?

        20 July 2010

I know about Globe Trotter but they’re just waaaayy too expensive. I don’t want to buy actual vintage because it might be too used and worn down. Do you know any stores or websites that have that classic look of suitcases?
